Working together in a team

Working in a team for completing a project

Working in a team for completing a project is never easy. We have to deal with many personalities. Sometimes misunderstandings arise due to our differing values and beliefs. The question is how do we work harmoniously in a team composed of people from different backgrounds?

EDS 113 Exercise 2 was the last group project that I did for this semester. Because of my past successes dealing with groupmates, I was confident I could be a good member and leader as well. I was fortunate to have group members who are not only nice but critical thinkers as well. We were able to submit our paper on time due to everyone’s effort and dedication.

I have learned two valuable lessons after working with our Ka Sensya team.

Be considerate

When people can’t meet deadlines, when they are unresponsive even after a couple of follow-ups, what do we do as a member, as a leader? Everyone’s dealing with their own issues in life. I have learned to be considerate of others after finishing this last group project, my last semester for taking PTC. If they can’t meet deadlines, kindly ask how they can make it. We do not deflate people just because they are not capable of doing something or a task given. We encourage them instead that is a lesson I have learned from reading the book “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale.

Be a good listener

The habit to be a good listener has some benefits. First, you will have the chance to know what the problems are and suggest solutions to solve them instead of jumping into conclusions. Secondly, you will know how much the speakers know about the topic and you will have a chance to add more value to the conversation. Nelson Mandela was a good leader it is not because he manipulated people around him. It is because he was a good listener, a great attitude that he got from his father, which is the importance of listening to others and be the last one to speak. Since I aim to be a good leader and a great follower as well, I am practicing what I have learned from Nelson Mandela’s experience and it made a difference.
