Why me?Why should I assess others?

Self and Peer Assessment

Self and Peer Assessments in the classroom

The self-assessment given by Dr. Lou guided me as to what is expected of me to accomplish. I checked it for a couple of times before submitting my final paper. For my future summative assessment, I will incorporate self-assessments for students to reflect on their learning, modify their actions and eventually enrich their learning experience.

In our school, peer assessment begins in fourth and fifth grade. Students receive a peer assessment checklist or rubric before giving presentations on the day of their summative assessment. Students often develop their own rubrics, complete with their own skill and description categories. I have observe that students become better and better in making presentations partly because of peer assessments thus develops meta-cognition.

Why peer assessment is important

Peer assessment is an important tool to be utilized in the classroom it is because it engages students in the learning process, develop students’ capacity to reflect on their own learning and skills (Student Peer Assessment, 2019). To be honest, I am not familiar with self and peer assessment. I didn’t even know why do we have to assess ourselves and our groupmates after finishing a group task. Last semester was my first encounter with self and peer assessments.

After finishing a group task, I remember a group mate commenting on my behavior, as the one facilitating the task, to be being “too proactive” which she described as “overbearing.” I thought I did my best for we got a perfect score on our group project. I reflected on my behavior and realized that I was a bit inconsiderate of others. For the next task, as the facilitator once again, I asked my group mates for their availability, for example, what day and time are they available for online meetings, who can join, etc. Moreover, I also set deadlines and always asked other members’ opinions before finalizing a decision. The comment I received although I didn’t expect to get it, made me adjust my behavior and reflect on my actions.
