How to form the present continuous

am + present participle

are + present participle

is + present participle

What is the present participle?

The present participle is the form of a verb ending with -ing.

For example:

stand + ing  =   standing

wait   + ing  =   waiting

eat     + ing  =   eating

drink   + ing  =   drinking

We need to double the last letter and add – ing for some verbs.

For example:

swim   +   ing    =  swimming

stop    +   ing    =  stopping

jog      +   ing    =   jogging

We use the present continuous to describe future plans or events. To form the present continuous, we use amis, and are as auxiliary verbs.

For example:

When are you going to talk with our teacher?

We are going out tonight.

Further examples:

They are going on a trip next week.

am visiting Jenny tomorrow.

She is taking violin lessons soon.

He is coming home late tonight.
