Philosophy of Teaching

In this article, I will be sharing with you my very own philosophy of teaching as an educator which I always adhere to.

The role of a teacher in the classroom is not just to impart their knowledge to students but also to assist them in developing their critical thinking skills. As an educator for over a decade, I have experience teaching English in the Japanese public and private schools. I have discovered that aside from lack of exposure to the English language, students are not motivated to learn, which hinders their critical thinking skills from flourishing. Through experience teaching in Japan and my education in the Philippines, I have refined my philosophical values over the years.

Educators should be equipped with essential skills to prepare our new generation for the challenges of tomorrow. I always see the need for innovation. The ubiquity of the internet makes information available to anyone who has access to it. Although the internet has changed our lives tremendously, educators should teach students how to create new knowledge based on the information they get from internet sources. This is profoundly a critical aspect of teaching. As the sole source of knowledge, teachers must be balanced in their teaching approach. I always ensure that my lesson plan involves activities that harness specific skills. Moreover, I sometimes incorporate technology in class to make the lesson fun and interactive.

Planning lesson plans is an integral part of the teaching process. As an IB (International Baccalaureate) educator, I give tremendous value to planning lesson plans. The more I plan, the more I am confident in teaching. I anticipate problems that might transpire during the class. Since the IB curriculum does not provide us with books and worksheets, teachers’ creativity is essential. I create my worksheets and other teaching materials based on what the students need to learn and to ensure that students are active participants in the class.

Another teaching philosophy I value the most is that all children are unique and should be given equal opportunities to grow mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. As a class adviser at an IB school, I adhere to the school’s vision and mission. My focus is not on academics alone; I also give each child the right to be heard. I make differentiated activities for students to be critical thinkers and become good communicators.

As educators, I believe that we are the shapers of our new generation of learners. Their success depends on our hands. I consider myself not only an educator but a disciplinarian as well. I always aim to make a difference in my students’ lives. My passion for education will be my armor as I face challenges in my teaching career.
