Forest School Review: Curriculum Principles

Forest School program is an inspirational process with no set program of activities. The FS programs aim to develop self-confidence and self-esteem by building natural connections. It enriches holistic development, which implies that academic performance is not prioritized to engage in learning. Participants improve self-confidence, behavior, physical health, and emotional and social skills by doing hands-on group activities (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilsipn-rE2Q, n.d).

Forest School Curriculum principles reflect the humanistic conception of the curriculum. FS is learner-centered. Participants build up emotional resilience as they take on appropriate risks. Goodland defined a humanistic curriculum as “a curriculum which provides a way of life centered upon human interests and values” (1967). Improvements in participants’ emotional and mental health directly result from the high self-esteem levels fostered by the FS curriculum. Participants also develop their team working skills and, communication and problem-solving skills. Through unplanned activities, participants become more independent (FSTC – Forest School Training in England & Scotland, n.d.).

As a parent, after watching the documentary about Forest Schools, I realized that I want our children to experience going to any Forest school program in the UK. To be global citizens of tomorrow, children should develop various competencies. Being in the woodland and in groups creates children’s sense of responsibility. They must think and act as they solve challenges together in a group. This will also enhance their communication and collaboration skills. These are the skills I want my children to develop, and I strongly suggest other parents know more about this kind of program.
