Teacher Professionalism

Why teacher professionalism is essential in teaching?

As educators, we do not only teach a particular subject to our students, but we are also a source of good values. They see not just a mere individual who comes to class to teach but someone who inspires and makes a difference in every student’s life. Professionalism is essential in teaching because our students perceive us as role models—a professional channels positivity in class and every student.

Developing a solid sense of professionalism in any situation leads to gaining trust among peers, colleagues, and students.

How do you manifest professionalism?

Professionalism, for me, refers to how you present yourself to others and how do you want to be viewed by others. It’s a façade of your persona. As a professional, you can remain calm and won’t let your emotions and bad feelings cloud your judgment. As an educator, I manifest professionalism by putting my dilemmas/emotions at bay when I am at work. Whenever I deal with a difficult situation at work or in class, I try to ask questions first to decipher the problem rather than start whining at anyone or start complaining. I take responsibility for any action that I do.

What are the most critical indicators of professionalism?

Based on the article that we have read, there are three leading indicators of professionalism: attitude, behavior, and communication.

A professional maintains a positive attitude and deals with the task at hand. As I have mentioned in Question 1, as an educator, I show a positive attitude by putting my dilemmas/emotions at bay whenever I am at work. The second one is behavior; based on the article, the author stated that preparedness “is an important focus in the current standards movement” (Kappa Delta Pi Record, 2003). Teachers should always plan their lessons. Being prepared and teaching any subject matter effectively that is assigned to them is an indicator of professionalism. They take responsibility for planning lessons that enhance students’ learning capacity. Lastly, professional teachers know how to communicate better with their peers, colleagues, and students. Moreover, experienced teachers encourage and inspire people around them.
